Shaw dominates 2013 New Zealand Paper Tiger National Title
There was plenty of action off Maraetai Beach over Auckland Anniversary Weekend when the Maraetai Sailing Club hosted the 2013 New Zealand Paper Tiger National Championships from January 24 to 28.
The event saw over 47 boats from all over the country competing in spectacular fashion in the Tamaki Straits with the racing producing some very tight results.
Muritai Yacht Club is situated alongside Rona Bay wharf, off the end of the Eastbourne village main street. The club has been established 75 years and is renowned as a friendly, family orientated dinghy club with arguably the best sailing conditions to be found in Wellington on most days. Breezes are predominately nor’westerly or southerly. Nor’west breezes can produce some chop, whereas in southerly conditions the sea is generally flatter with a low swell.
The beach area for launching can vary from firm to soft sand and gravel, depending on recent wave action. Larger trolley wheels are required, much like at McRae.
Eastbourne, (pop. 3,500) is situated on the Eastern shores of Wellington Harbour, in Lower Hutt City. It is approximately 25 minutes drive from central Wellington. Click here for map and photos.
In Eastbourne’s village shopping area you will find a small supermarket, tavern, dairy, medical centre, pharmacy, butcher etc, as well as craft shops and cafes. In nearby Days Bay (1km) there are also cafes and a craft shop, as well as a very good restaurant.
